At first there seemed every prospect of an even match, but Middlesex, as it has done frequently of late, cut up badly when the crisis came, and Oxford won by 156 runs. Mr Snow, a left-hand medium-pace bowler, made his debut for Middlesex, and in ft great measure heljied to produce the dismissal of the Oxonians for the small total of 121, the last four wickets only realising 15 runs. The Middlesex innings, too, was some thing of a curiosity, as three batsmen, Messrs. C. J. Thornton (62), I. 1). Walker (60), and C. E. Green (20), contributed 142, and the eight remain ing members of the Eleven, 32 runs. Middlesex headed the University by CO run s ; but in their second venture tlie Oxonians reversed the aspect of affairs considerably, as seven—chief among them, Messrs. A. J. Webbe (68), Pulman (46), Ridley (42), and Game (35),—made double figures, and “ extras,v contributed the respectable pioportion of 26 runs in a total of 304. Middlesex at tlie close had 245 runs to win ; but, with the exception of Mr. A. W. Herbert, who played good cricket for 19 not out, no one could withstand Mr. Foord-Kelcey’ s fast delivery, and the innings only reached the insignificant sum of 88. Oxford, 121 and 304 ; total, 425. Middlesex, 181 and 88 ; total, 269. Mr. Foord-lieleey ’ s figures in the second innings of Middlesex are given below :— Overs. Maidens. Runs. Wickets. 34 16 39 7 (0 bowled) (4) Middlesex v. Surrey. June 21, 22, and 23. Here tlie scoring, considering the excellent character of the wickets and the nature of the bowling was comparatively small, tlie first innings of Surrey (158) being the highest of the match. Three wickets of Surrey were down for two runs, but in the end the total came to 158, E lliott play ing an excellent innings of 46. Messrs. W . H. Hadow (42), C. J. Thornton (30), and A. J. Webbe (28), contributed exactly 100 runs for Middlesex, but n
