James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1876
49 owing to iiis excellent innings of 101—a fine display of batting towards the close—that Kent was able to overmatch tne mighty nosts of Marylebone. In all tne Kentish team scored 262, but, even this sum was surpassed by Marylebone m tne second innings to the extent of four runs, and this too wAtn Mr. VV. G. Grace only a contributor of 25. Mr. George Bird was at the head of the poll with 75 runs, and the match was generally interesting from the fact that Mr. Yardley made in it his hrst appearance of the season and showed all his old skill in his two innings of 2o and 1(5. Kent won by -six wickets. Marylebone, 105 and 267 ; total, 370. Kent, 2o2 and 103; total, 372. (10) M C C. and Ground v- Eleven of Yorkshire. Scarborough, September 0, 7 and S. The match was not under the direct management o f the Yorkshire Com mittee, and was in reality the special charge of a local magnate. Neither was it unreasonably favoured by the elements, as the weather was of a cheer less disposition throughout. Alfred Shaw changed liis tactics and was the principal batsman this time for the Club, instead of as usual the bowler. His 50 was a resolute display of batting, and tne one redeeming feature in a dull score of 160. The Yorksliiremen iell short of this total by 3J runs, Lock- wood and Greenwood as usual lending the material aid, and the lormer with 10 .and the latter with 22. Hill, Clayton and Lockwood between them eiiectuaiiy contracted the second innings to the reduced proportions of 87 runs and when rain stopped the play eventually, Yorkshire had lost only two wickets, -and made 79 of a required total of 123. It will be safe, therefore, to state that the match was drawn greatly in favour of the Yorkshire team. M.C.C., 160 and 87 ; total, 247. Yorkshire, 121 and 79 (two wickets); total, 201.
