James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1876

46 (2) M C.C- and Ground r. Eleven Players of Yorkshire. Lord’s, May 21 and 25. Marylebone this time had a strong eleven, but the wicket at first played very badly, and hence the scores on both sides were small. The Club had first chance, but with the exception of Messrs Hadow (31) and Buller (26), no one cared to face Clayton, who clean bowled Wild and the two amateurs just mentioned. The total was 123, but the Yorkshiremen were even less successful to the extent of 30 runs, Hicks (26), and Andrew Greenwood (22), alone making any stand. In the second innings Mr. W. G. Grace took the edge off the Yorkshire bowling with a capital score of 71, a free hitting contribution of 4 3 by Mr. Crooke, and a formidable show of “ extras ” (21) being the other chief features in the innings of 205. Yorkshire required 236 runs to win, but Shaw and Mr. W. G. Grace completely upset their calculations, Clayton and Emmett making respectively 27 and 20 of a total of 96. Yorkshire lost by 139 runs, Marylcbone scored 123 and 205, and Yorkshire 93 and 96. (3) MCC* and Ground v. Cambridge University. Cambridge, May 27, 28, and 29. The Club was not represented by a very powerful eleven, although it could boast the possession of its best attack in Shaw, Morley, Clayton, and Ran dom None the less, nine of the University batsmen gained double figures, and the score showed the very respectable sum of 233, the Hon. E. Lyttel ton being chief contributor with a hard-hit innings of 41. The bowling of the Cantabs, too, was apparently little relished by Marylebone, Mr. C. M. Sharpe (slow round) telling with deadly effect in both innings. Indeed the batting in each venture was feeble in the extreme, Mr. A. F. Jefferies being the highest scorer in the first with 26 not out, and Mr. E. F. S. Tylecote in the second with a slashing score of 64. Marylebone made 114 and 154, and the University had no difficulty in getting the 36 runs wanted to win with the loss of one batsman, Marylebone thus losing by nine wickets. (4) M.C.C- and Ground v. Lancashire. May 31 and June 1. Neither Hide can be said to have mustered its full strength the County especially Buffering by the absence of Mr. Appleby, and the Club still more J ? the loss of Alfred Shaw and Morley, who were aiding Notts against Yorkshire.
