CHAPTER X II. A FEW LOOSE STRINGS. CR ICKET IN TH E COLON IES . \yK |iave received the following letter from a correspondent in New Zealand* *V\Te insert it with pleasure, and shall be pleased at all times to hear news from brother cricketers in the Colonies. A u c k l a n d , N.Z., May litli, 1875. To Editor of James Lillywhite’s Cricketers’ Annual. D f . vr S ir ,— Knowing the interest that you take in the rapid progress of Cricket in the Colonies, I take the liberty of forwarding you the doings of the Carlton Cricket Club, Auckland, New Zealand, for the season just ended— 1874-75. As Auckland bolds the palm of championship of New Zealand (an Auckland Eleven having beaten every Eleven in the county), and as the Carlton, though a very young club, is well known here, I hope you will give us more than a passing notice. Your Cricket Annual finds its way here, and not only is read with satisfac tion, but acknowledged as the best work that has appeared on the game. Auckland possesses three very good cricket grounds; the one in the Public Domain is by far the best, however. It is w'elllaid out and is very beautiful, being encircled with trees, and in close proximity to the Gardens. I enclose a list of Matches played, and beg to remain, dear Sir, Yours truly, CHARLES A.
