205 M atthews , T. J. (Clifton). Has a very stubborn defence, aiul plays with a straight bat, but has a style of his own. Has fallen off considerably of late years, having apparently gone in for hit. M iles , R. F. (Marlborough and Oxford). Bowls left round, (slow), at times, with great success. Not a reliable batsman. M onkland , F. G. (Repton). A useful all round cricketer, a bat with freedom and confidence, and a smart field. T ownsend , F. Has proved himself in good company to be a first class cricketer, with great powers of batting ; indeed, his batting is of the finest kind, and no eleven of Gentlemen is complete without him ; bowls “ lobs ” for the county. K ington , G aft . (Harrow). A good bat, and punishing hitter when set, fine field. B rotherhood , R. A fast left underhand bowler and at times very destruc tive ; very weak bat, and neither quick nor a safe field. B ush , R. E ., and H eath , A. H. (See notes on Clifton College Eleven). _____ HAMPSHIRE. B ooth , C (Cambridge University). A good bat, getting runs quickly, and still a line field. P rothero , R. E. A good bat, safe field, and very fair change howler. C ecil , E. First rate field, good hat, and a fair left-handed bowler. H all , G. First-rate fie ld ; very steady bat, likely to be of great use to the county. w ood , A. A most brilliant hitter with very fair defence, and a very safe man in the field. Fox, T. A useful man all-round, but has been unlucky this season. B athurst , L. A very fair wicket-keeper, and a dangerous hat. H argreaves , R. A moderately good slow bowler, a good bat, and a safe field. 9 E ccles , C apt . C. V. A good slow bow ler, dangerous bat, and a first rate field. B utton , H. A useful hat, and a good change bowler. D uncan , D. A good bat and safe in the field. K endle , R ev . W . J. (Sherborne). A pretty and effective bat, especially strong on the off-side, cutting very clean, a neat field anywhere, and safe catch. R idley , A. W. (Oxford), and L ongman , G. H. (Cambridge), also play for Hampshire. % KENT. A bsolom , C. A. (Cambridge.) A splendid field and sure catch ; a slow round-aim bowder, and very useful, as he knows how to use his head. B ennet , F. W. (R.E.) Fine bat, always playing correet cricket. F ellowes , Capt. A valuable recruit for K en t ; good bowler, with a high delivery that does great execution on a rough w ick e t ; a hard and fearless hitter.
