T here may possibly be some to dispute the assertion that the past season was essentially one favourable to bowlers, but facts are stubborn things. In 1874 no bowler who had delivered a thousand balls or more had an average o f less than ten runs, while in 1875 Mycroft and Alfred Shaw each gained that distinction, the former having a wonderful analysis of just seven runs and a third for each of his eighty wickets. In 1874 only seventeen bowlers reached the second table of fifteen runs per wicket or under, while in 1875 there are thirty-seven names on the list. Among the Amateurs Mr. W . G. Grace was certainly the foremost, taking into account the number of balls delivered, and Messrs. Appleby, Foord-Kelcey, E. M. Grace, W. H . Hadow, Ridley, Snow, and Sharpe, the most effective after him. Mycroft and Alfred Shaw each well deserve a position to themselves among the professionals, and their deeds are not likely to be surpassed in future vears. Of the rest Clayton, Lillywhite, Lockwood, W. McIntyre, Morley, Randon, Rylott, Southerton, and Watson, of the old stagers, fully maintained their reputation, and G. F. Hearne and Armitage showed most promise among the coming players.
