first innings, Mr. Longman’s 18 one of the very best displays with the bat during the season. In their second venture the Players made a good start, as when the first wicket fell 06 runs had been scored. Jupp’s 52 was a sterling innings, but the “ tail” did little, and the total only after all came to 165. This gave the gentlemen 140 to win, and their attempt was somewhat curious. The ground played very badly, especially to Morley’s bowling, and the end was awaited with excitement: one wicket (Mr. Walker) fell for 10, and 2 and 8 (W. G. Grace and Hornby) for 26. In three successive overs from Morley, Messrs. Longman, Ridley and G. F. Grace went all at 30, and at 31 Mr. Fryer fell, the seventh wicket. Then (4.30 p.m.) came the rain iu a deluge, and for two hours it continued without reduction of force. An inspection of the wickets on the cessation left the umpires no alternative but to declare the ground unfit for play, and so thePlayers were deprived of a certain victory.
