James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1876
96 ns the result proved. I1 ive wickets were down for nine runs , and it was only due to tlie good defence of Humphrey that even so small an aggregate as 71 ■was icached. Sussex won by an innings and 37 runs. Sussex, 288. Surrey ISO and 71 ; total, 251. (4) Surrey v. Yorkshire (return). Oval, August 16, 17 and 18. There seined every likelihood of a good match at the outset, but Surrey threw away every chance at the finish. Seven Surrey wickets were down for 87__ a bad start. Then came Elliott and Southerton, and an excellent (not out) innings of 52 by the former was the chief feature in the Surrey score of 182. Matters looked as promising, too, for Surrey during the Yorkshire innings and, indeed, had the fielding been in any way up to the mark, the scores of both Hicks and Armitage would have been curtailed. As it was the former made 61, the latter 27 (not out), and the total came to 161, 21 runs short of Surrey. The batting of the southern eleven in their second venture was very indifferent. Jupp was absent, owing to illness, and hence there were only nine wickets to tall. Mr. Read made 49, and not out, by correct batting, hut Mr. Strachan (12) and Mr. Lucas (10) were the only other batsmen to make double figures, and the result was a poor show’ of 105. Even then, with 127 runs for Yorkshire to win, there seemed a slight chance for Surrey, hut execrable fielding ruined all hopes, and Yorkshire made the runs with the loss of only two wickets, Armitage scoring 66, and not out. Yorkshire, 1G1 and 127 (two wickets); total, 288. Surrey, 182 and 105 total, 87. Overs. Maidens. 28 63 6 18 69 6 Runs. Wickets.
