Surrey showed little advance likely to be permanent, if at times it made some excellent displays. Scarcity of professional and a sufficiency of amateur talent represent a combination calculated to unsettle an executive. Ten matches were played, of which 5 were lost and 3 won, 2 of the victories being close shaves. In Mr. Read the County found a useful all round cricketer, and in Elliott a sterling batsman. Jupp and Richard Humphrey were both out of form with the hat, but Pooley was in better form than ever with the gloves, and Southerton, as usual of late, had to bear the whole brunt of the bowling, at times with signal success. A fast bowler would bo invaluable to Surrey, but the article seems scarce. Results of Matches- Matches played, 10 ; Won, 3 ; Drawn, 2; Lost, 5.
