(1) Notts v. Yorkshire- Sheffield, May 31, June 1. So much bowling on both sides that small scores were not unexpected. Alfred Shaw and MTntyre dismissed the Yorkshiremen for the insignificant total of 89—Uylett, the chief contributor, with twenty-six. Notts fared even worse, as Shrewsbury (twenty-six) and Alfred Shaw (eighteen) were the only batsmen to reach double figures, and Yorkshire had an advantage of five runs. Rowbotham (twenty-seven) and Lockwood (twenty-one) were chiefly instrumental in achieving the second score (107) o f Yorkshire. Notts had 113 runs to win, and thanks to W ild—who played a splendid innings of sixty- one— and Shrewsbury, whose twenty-six was an excellent display of def< nee, they won by four wickets. The last innings gave rise to a most discreditable wrangle. Hill threw Oscroft’s wicket down, and Coward, the umpire, gave the batsman out. Oscroft disputed the decision on the score that the ball was dead when he was out of his ground, and Wild left the wickets with Os croft, and for half an hour the Nottingham players refused to continue the game.
