Notts cricket in 1875 presented a marked contrast to the same article as exhibited in the year immediately preceding. In 1874 ten matches showed four defeats while last season there was only one reverse in the same number of engagements. Notts was admittedly the champion County of 1875, and it gained its laurels fairly. J. C. Shaw, useless except with the hall, was shunted for Clarke a younger and more useful all-round player, and Selby wa s again drafted into the ranks, a great addition to the strength of the County. A very promising young batsman was discovered in Shrewsbury, and another colt, Barnes, is likely to he of considerable help. Wild played very fine cricket at times, but Daft showed a decided falling oil with the bat as in the field. Notts bowling was almost monopolised by one noted plover, Alfred Shaw. At least he got 73 out of a 16(5 wickets, while Morley, oddh enough, bowled best in matches other than those of the County, though, undoubtedly the best fast bowler of the day.
