89 getting, it may be stated that Mr. W . H. Hadow was in more than an hour for seven runs. Notts won by an innings and two runs. Notts, 163. Middlesex, 102 and 59 ; total, 161. Overs. Maidens. Runs. Middlesex was exceptionally w*eak in bowling, with Mr. Francis and Flanagan both absent, and Mr. W. H. Hadow obliged to leave the field owing to illness after the delivery of a few overs. Surrey played six amateurs in its eleven, Richard Humphrey being unable to play, in consequence of an accident. Four of the amateurs, too, Messrs. Read (98), Lucas (50), Game (47) and Tillard (20) contributed 216 out of 293, Southerton, the highest scorer of the five professionals, with 26. Mr. Hadow was well enough to bat by the time the Middlesex innings arrived, and fine cricket he showed too, carrying out his bat for a really excellent score of 45 out of 118. The second effort of Middlesex was afar more promising affair. The first seven batsmen all reached double figures, Messrs. Green (54) and Hadow (38), the principal subscribers, being both, strangely enough, caught at the wicket from Southerton by Pooley, who had four batsmen in the innings. Mr. Green’s 51 was an admirable display of free hitting in his old form. In the end Surrey had 28 runs to get to win, and Messrs. Read and Lucas got them in double quick time, the former scoring 22 of them. Surrey won by ten wickets. Surrey, 293 and 28 (no wickets); total, 321. Middlesex, 118 and 202 ; total, 320. Overs.
