Cotterill for 37, b:ut there was only one other , double figure (Charlwood ll) and s�ven b�tsmen between t�ein only realised 34 runs. Surrey won by a;n innings and two runs. Surrey, 348. Sussex, 147 and 19·9; total, 346. . (6) Surrey v. Yorkshire. Oval, Aug. 18 & 19. The match proved one of the great curiosities of the year , if only for Jupp's ma1�ellous and 11nequalled feat . Thanks to Lockwood ( 69 ) and Thewlis (50) , who , by splendid cricket , scored 146 of 181 runs from the bat , Yorkshire made 187, e ight of the side making together 18 r1Jns. Surrey's first innings was brief, as Emmett and Ulyett were almost 11nplayable, and the score · only came to 95 , Jupp, in first, not out 43. . The follow on was more successful for Surrey; thanks again to Jupp's success. Jupp went in first and was again not out with 109 out of 193, an innin g s got without t � e shadow of a c�anee. Jupp's achievement , it , may be stated, is imprece­ dented , and i� was only j ust that some recognition ' should have been made, a subscription headed by the Surrey Club, and amounting in all to £20, being made · on bis behalf.
