I 78 (4) Notts v. Surrey. Aug. 10 & 11. O11e of the ve1·y best matches of the yea1·, only won by ' Notts lite1·all 'on the post.'' Sltt"rey was again poorly rep1·esented. Heavy 1,.ain a11d a wet gi·ound spoiled the scoring, as the f ot11,. innings in all did not amo11nt to 320 1�uns. Sltn·ey won the toss and just reached 100, Richard Hlimphrey 34, �Ir. 'filla1·d 22 and S,va11n 16 t-0,vards that s11m .. The first venture o f · Notts was a ctu·iosity, as it only lasted an hot1r-and-a-quarter, and only reached 44, five of them failing to sco1·e. Surrey had 56 to the good on the first, and that nt1mbe1' ,vas all that it gainec,l in the second innings, R. Hum phrey again being fo1·emost ,vith 15. To win Notts wanted 113 and nine · wickets were do,vn fo1· 100, with J. C. Shaw and Biddulph as the last hope. Victory seemed to be within hail of Strrrey, but J. C. Shaw was stt1bborn at tl1e crisis and Bicl(lulph hit resolutely until the end came. A. Shaw did not bowl through the match. Notts won by one wicket. Notts, 44 and 144 ( 1tlne · wickets) ; total, 158. Notts had to defend the wickets first, Sussex having won the toss .. No wicket was down for 35, bt1t the side in all only scored 73, Wild b e ing . nrs.t with 23. Six of the Sussex Eleven on the other hand reached double figtrres (Mr. J.M. Cotterill 31), and their total came to 124. The second innings of Notts began badly, as Wild, Oscroft, Mr. Wright and Daft were all down for 26. Then came M'lntyre to tm·n the scale. His hitting was so determined thai he made 42 out of 47 runs, and of the remaining 43 from the bat Biddulph gave 22, nine of the Eleven making 21 i·uns from the bat. Sussex had 39 to win, but this cost them the loss of three batsmen, Mr. J. M. Cotterill taking out his bat for 23. Sussex 124 and 41 (three wickets ;) total, 165. Noits, 73 and 89 ; total, 162. The first innings to each side showed no large scores, as Yorkshire only gained 115 (Lockwood 36, Rowbotham 31) and Notts 77, 14 too of these latter coming under the head of extras. In its second try though Yo1�ksbire macle ample ame11ds, as seven of the Eleven realised double figm"es, and in these ,ve1·e two muob above the average, one of 90 by Lockwood, and 53 by Rowbotham.
