At first it was expected that they would play in the Bloomer costume, as being less likely to in­ terfere with their freedom of movement than a� other, but the inno'Va­ tion was considered too sta1�tiing for a British co·mmunity, and the idea ,vt:1,s given up i11 favolir of an atti1"e o. f the ordinary shaped dress, made of calico, \Vith a colottred jacket to distinguish the respective sides. Every­ thing being in readiness, the ladies-the one side wearing red Garibaldi jackets and sailors' hats, and the other blue jackets and similar hats­ mai"ched in pah ..s-red and blt1e being together-from the tent into the field't beaded by then· captains. Their appea1·ance was very picturesque, and they were loudly applauded by the on.lookers. The reds first hanclled the bat ; and they sec\ired 62 1 ..tms before the last wicket fell. After the lapse of half an hot.tr the 1·eds took the field, and they put their opponents out for 83 1·1ms.
