James Lillywhite's Cricketers' Annual 1875

I CHAPTER IX. • THE AVERAGES IN 1874. THE BATSMEN. In 1873 the c1·y of extenuation for a comparative decadence in the n11mbe1· of high sco1·es ,vas the occasional interfere11ce of '\\et. In 1874 it is certain that no such plea could have been 1·egistered. The grounds were in excellent orde1 .. , ancl the batting figures were in some cases t1nusually high, even to the extent of 1·eviving the old cry about the supe1·iority of the bat over the ball. Mr. W. G. Grace had no compeer in 1874 , as he has never had since he first bm·st upon the scene of :first..class matches. Then comes Jupp, the stol1t professional easily second in rank , and the first of the th1·ee batsmen (M i ·. Grace excepted ) who ha, .. e an average of ove1 .. thirty runs. Of the others, little need be said , as figt1res Rpeak as plainly as wo1·ds. Lockwood, Ch ar l wood, Daft, James Phillips, Rowbotham , and Thewlis among the Profes- · sionals are the foremost ; n11d among the Gentlemen, Messrs. W. G. Grace, G. F. Grace, C. S. Gordon, A. N. Ho1nby , J. M. Cotterill , F. E. R. F ry e1· Lord Harris , G. H. Longman, C. Mo.xriott , I. D. Walke1· , C. J. Otta, vay, . a nd Townsend. James Phillips has wo1·thily pushed forward i 11 to the very front rank of Professionals , ancl Messrs. F. Townsend and J. M. Cotterill ought to be deemed worthy of positions in the best ele, 1 en of E11glish Amateu1·s. SCORERS OF 1 ,000 RUNS AND UPW. .\RDS. BATTING A VEBAOES.
