r • CHAPTER VI. • THE CHIEF SCORERS IN 1874- With weather generally propitious, and the grounds mostly in favoru� of run getting , it is not a matter of SlllJ>rise that the scoring was heavy in 1874. The present roll of centurions is indeed much more lengthy than was that of 1873 , but the circum�tances were very difierent in the two cases. In 1873 there were five batsmen only to pass unto the second h11ndred , while the list given herewith shows that thirteen have made 200 runs , and one even nearly reached 350. The feat achieved by Mr. W� E. Collins, the .:first batsman on the list, was little short of marvellous. The figures have been fully authenticated, so that it may with safety be 1·ecorded that the 838 runs were made in a little over three hours. Nor was there any ex­ tenuating plea. of bo11ndaries to militate against the achievement , for the hits were one nine, two seve1is, six sixes , twelve fives, twenty-five fours, sefventeen threes, eighteen twos, and thirty-three singles.
