But for its defeats by Glouceste1·sLire, Yorkshire would have held the pride of place among the Counties of 1874. Extenuation seems a feeble argt1ment, but Y01·kshire was very badly 1epresented on the occasion of its two reverses, thol1gh the victories of Gloucestershiee we1·e so crushii1g as to make any explanation appear l1nwarranted. The doings of Yorkshire were successful in the extreme in the past year , even taking into account the only other reve1·se experienced, at the hands of Lancashire. Hill was ltnfor t11nately disabled and his services lost with the ball d11rj11g a · greater part of the season. Fortunately thot1gh Ulyett filled his place most, ably and Emmett was never in better form so that his help was not so much need()d. Lockwood and Andxew Greenwood at one period were a little ''off'' but the end of the year found them in condjtion, and as far · as we can j t1dge, there is a brilliant season in prospect fo1· Yorkshire in 1875. -:-- " Results of Matches.
