This time, though, Surrey had no excuse of ill luck , for the fielding at times was far from perfect , and Charlwood was allowed to make 43 in the second innings of Sussex, thanks to a very bad " miss " by Mr. Chenery at long -on. This was the first appearance of Southerton against his native county under the new rules , and his value was clearly proved , as he secured nine wickets , and in the two innings made the highest aggregate of 35 runs . Surrey had 150 runs to win, but Fillery's bowling unsettled them altogether , and they lost by 27 runs . Surrey , 108 and 123 ; total , 231. Sussex , 92 and 66 ; total , 258. Mr. Boult (26 and 51), just defeated Jupp (37 and 39), for the premier place among the batsmen of Surrey , and the county succeeded in more than doubling their first score in the second innings , Richard Humphreyb making a creditable score of 51 on their behalf .
