James Lillywhiite's Cricketers' Annual 1874
6 9 against the Players at Lord's . The result was not very dissimilar to that of the first match at Manchester , as small scores were prevalent throughout , and the average here again only just exceeded eight runs per batsman . Lancashire headed their opponents by 31 runs on the first innings , Mr. Hillkirk , by " terriffic hitting " making 56 (not out) of 94 runs in all , or 56 out of 72 made during his stay . Ultimately Lancashire required 113 to win, butthey collapsed altogether and were all dismissed for 47 runs, Mr. Appleby (not out, 13) the principal contributor . It was Emmett's day with a vengeance , and Clayton gave such assistance to Yorkshire that they had little cause to lament Hill's absence . Yorkshire won by 64 runs. Oval , July 14, 15, 16. Three days nominally , but practically only two, owing to unceasing rain throughout the second . Lancashire were well settled for 100 runs , and Surrey were confident . There was no reason for this confidence though, and matters did not look so well whenJupp, Richard Humphrey, and Mr. NormanMorris , the three best bats in the eleven , were out and only twenty-three runs scored . A worse collapse than ever now, for the remaining seven wickets only realised six runs from the bat , and the innings was over in three -quarters of an hour for thirty -three runs . Surrey were again fortunate with the ball , as Lancashire in their second innings only made 115, and to win Surrey only required 183 runs . Ground dead , and M'Intyre almost unplayable . These were unpromising features in the look -out for Surrey, and their second effort merely produced 76; even this sum due mainly to the resolute batting of Swannand Southerton at the finish . In the two matches with Lancashire Surrey made248 runs for forty wickets , six runs per batsman in four innings . In both matches, too, William M'Intyre and Watson bowled unchanged throughout . Lancashire wonby 106 runs . Lancashire , 100 and 115 ; total , 224. Surrey , 33 and 76 ; total , 109. O v e r s. M a i d e n s. R u n s. W i c k e t s. W. M'Intyre (Lancashire ).
