(1 ) Lancashirev. Yorkshire. Manchester , May29 and 30. Yorkshire , smarting from the sting of two decisive defeats in London at the hands of Middlesex and the Marylebone Club. The ball had the best of the bat throughout , as thirty -one wickets only realised 259 runs , or an average of a little over eight runs to each batsman. There were nine single figures in the first innings of Lancashire , and eight in the second ; Reynolds , highest score in the two combined, with twenty runs . Yorkshire wonby nine wickets . Surrey, crippled by the dismissal of Pooley, rather unsettled ; Lancashire , well represented , only excepting the absence of Mr. Appleby . Richard Humphrey the chief scorer with eleven . Surrey were out for 44, and Lancashire reached as manyas 262, of which Mr. Hornbycontributed 128. The Surrey fielding was poor in the extreme, or this numbermight have been greatly reduced . As it was, Surrey had to follow on under a load of 218 runs to save the innings , but of these they only secured 105, Richard Humphrey again to the fore with 25, and Swann, a revival , second with 22.
