James Lillywhiite's Cricketers' Annual 1874

6 7 Overs. Maidens. R u n s. Capt. Fellowes (fast -round) ... 22 15 2 4 W k t s. 7 (2 bowled. ) (3) K e n tv. Surrey. Oval , Aug. 18, 19, and 20. Surrey were a little fortunate in point of weather , and won in a down-pour of rain . Jupp made 76 for Surrey , and G. M'Canlis 60 for Kent, or the first innings of each would have been very insignificant , the score of the former reaching 156 , that of the latter only 119. Surrey , too , were even less successful in their second attempt , for they went in to Coppinger's moderate " lobs " like lions and came out like lambs. Indeed, they only succeeded in securing 119 runs , 39 of these by Mr. W. Read, an amateur colt from Reigate . With 167to winKentwent to the wickets a second time, with every thing against them in the wayof ground and weather . Six wickets for 75 runs , and downcame the rain in a heavy shower, play, it is worthy of remark, having been maintained in a drizzle for some little time. Ultimately , the good fielding of Surrey caused a speedy downfall of wickets , and Kent were defeated by 61 runs. Kent, 119 and 105 ; total , 224. Surrey, 156 and 229 ; total , 385. Swire , Old Trafford Ground, Manchester . A nuncertain county at the best , this same shire of Lancaster . At one time heroes of a decisive triumph at Manchester , and next beaten by a county not overburdened with talent , such as Kent. Four matches won, and three lost ! The result , neither glorious nor absolutely unsatisfactory . Still , Lancashire can boast a formidable eleven , with amateur batsmen like Hornby, Wright , Rowley, an amateur bowler like Appleby , and two such professional "trundlers " like William M'Intyre and Watson, two notable instances of the success of a graft on degenerated stems . Indeed , to this imported help Lanca- shire owes nolittle of its success , as the statistics show, MʻIntyre's fast delivery shattering the sticks , while Watson's insidious slows crept gently up to the w i c k e t. b e l o w.
