James Lillywhiite's Cricketers' Annual 1874

5 9 heartily wish the County every success . A tleast the Fourteen of the County are to be congratulated on the feat they achieved on September 4 and 5 in beating the best team of the invincible County of Notts by an innings and 18 runs, and in getting the Nottingham Eleven downin their first innings for only1 4runs. Such deeds should encourage , and, more than that , procure the co-operation of every cricketer in the County, so that we hope to see a more ambitious flight in 1874. R e s u l t so f M a t c h e s . Lancashire were too strong for their opponents at every point , so that Derby- shire had to endure a defeat , secured without any great expenditure of labour . Lancashire were 30 runs to the good at the end of the first innings , and Derby- shire failed signally in their second attempt, even to the extent of having not one single batsman to make double figures . The deadly bowling of William McIntyre, and the insidious slows of Watson, will perhaps account for every shortcoming . Indeed , the bowling throughout was the only real feature of the match. Lancashire wonby eight wickets . Lancashire , 118 and 26 (two wickets ) ; total , 144. Derbyshire , 88 and 52 ; total , 140. O v e r s. M a i d e n s. R u n s. W i c k e t s. W. General debility at every point was the chief feature of Derbyshire cricket in this match. Their batting was feeble in the extreme, with one exception in the person of Mr. W. G. Curgenven, who made39 (out of 70) in the first , and 10 in the second innings , or 49 out of 156 runs, the miserable aggregate of Derbyshire in their two attempts . Nor was their bowling up to the mark, as, with the exception of Myecroft , their attempts were all very expensive . In extenuation though, it maybe stated that Flint , certainly one of their best , if not their very best bowler, was away. Lancashire wonin one innings with 2 runs to spare . Lancashire , 238.
