(Forbenefit of Cricketers ' Fund.) Thefirst important match of the season of 1873, and a worthy inauguration for the benefit of a deserving society . Aliberal grant of the ground too, and of all the officials , reflected credit on the executive at Prince's . Alfred Shawwas restricted from assisting the North by his engagement with the Marylebone Club, but otherwise the two sides were represented as well as they could possibly have been . The season had not advanced far enough for long scores , though " the champion " made 68 out of 108 runs when he got out in the second innings , and Richard Humphrey obtained 43 in the same venture by excellent cricket . Mr. W. H. Hadowwas the next of importance on the list , as he scored 47(not out) and 29 against the best bowling , and Lockwood proved the extent of his powers both with bat and ball , for he made 42 and 25, or 67 runs in all , and in the second innings of the South captured four wickets in the course of seventeen overs . Daft , too , secured 14 and 33 (not out) and no one knows how the match might have ended when rain put a premature termination
