The Players were placed in the unpleasant position of having to follow on with a load of 237 runs in arrear , and but for the timely hitting of Martin McIntyre , which produced them56, and the fine batting of Oscroft , which realised 44 runs, they would have been in a huge minority at the finish . As it was they were utterly routed , and lost in one innings with 55 runs to spare . Yorkshire was playing Lancashire at the sametime, and hence Emmett, Pinder , and Lockwood were lost to the Players .
