James Lillywhiite's Cricketers' Annual 1874
4 7 towantof support . Acontest that will be remarkable for , perhaps , the worst wicket ever seen, even at Lord's . Hence, severe blows and ugly bruises , especially among the Sussex batsmen, for whose special benefit a tear -away bowler had been engaged in Mr. Coles , of the Indian Civil Engineering College at Cooper's Hill . Possibly a happy escape for those who composed the Sussex Eleven , even at the expense of a defeat for the County . Lillywhite and Fillery hadthe Sussex bowling to themselves . / O v e r s. Amatchthat did fulfil the general predilection in favour of the Dark Blues, but not so hollow an affair as was contemplated . The better side , however, did certainly triumph , so that justice was fairly dealt with . The Cambridge batting proved stronger than was anticipated , but, their inferiority in bowling wasmanifest , especially towards the finish . The Oxford batting , though, was consistent from the first manto the last , and this could not be said of Cambridge, so that , possibly , the latter were seen at their best . The Oxford Captain played really good cricket (as he was sure to do) making 41 in his first , and 52 in his second innings , not a bad example to his side . O n the other hand, the Cambridge Captain was certainly out of form, and the chief honours of that party fell to two new performers , Messrs . W. J. Ford (51 not out, and 11), Captain of the Repton Eleven in 1872, and T. Latham, an old Wykehamist (0 and 48). Mr. Wallroth , of whose prowess rumour spoke very highly , disappointed everybody , and Mr. Nepean pleased manywho had supported his claims for years . Mr. Gamedid not have a shooter until he had got well set in his first innings . and his 48 satisfied more than one Oxonian who " swore by him." Oxford wonby three wickets , as the score below will attest . C A M B R I D G E . G. H. Longman(Eton), c and b Butler A. S. Tabor (Eton), b Boyle W . Blacker (Harrow), b Butler 1st inn. F. E. R.
