Avery weak Eleven of the Club pitted against a team of youngsters far from despicable . The result a triumph for numbers, the Fifteen winning with seven wickets in hand. The most successful batsmen, as usual , all came from the North, as Rothwell , of Cheshire , headed the poll with 26 and 10, by free hitting . Starkey , of Yorkshire , a Colt well matured , made 20, Shelton , of Notts , 15, and Wheeler, also of Notts , played cricket of a high order for his second innings of 27. In the bowling , Ashby, of Surrey , carried off the palm , and his analysis w a sofitself a feature. Ashby(fast round) .. Overs. Maidens. R u n s. Wickets. 7 5 4 4(three bowled) Amongthe rest no great form , though Armitage , of Yorkshire , framed like an all -round cricketer , and Shrewsbury , of Notts , a mere boy , combated Alfred Shawand Wootton, with pluck as well as skill . Alfred Shaw was on " the spot " in the first innings , as the figures will show- ٢: A .S h a w O v e r s. 2 8 . 1 M a i d e n s. The Oxonians were above the average at every point , their batting especially showing strength , as nine of the Eleven mounted into double figures , and this , too , against six bowlers , among them Alfred Shaw, Wootton , Clayton , and Rylott .
