A very fine batsman , possessing great freedom of style , with good defence ; cuts smartly , and cannot be surpassed in the field at any position ; a little off in 1873. Has lost some of his brilliance , but still at times shows all his old form ; one of the prettiest batsmen at cutting still ; fielded well , and played a good innings against Gloucester- shire at Clifton . Address -Dorking , Surrey . JUPP , HENRY. Born at Dorking , Nov. 19, 1841. Possessed of unwearied patience and fine defence , with more freedom of late in his driving and cutting ; one of the surest fields , a safe catch , a good long -stop , and can also keep wicket ; played better than ever in 1873. A good bowler, very straight , and at times very effective with " tices " ; also a good short -slip . PALMER, WILLIAM THOMAS. Born at Canterbury , Jan. 5, 1848. 5 ft. 7 in.; 11 st. 2 lbs . A good batsman, though he hardly fulfilled the expectations formed of himduring last season , playing too muchforward ; a safe field , and a useful tutor to a club . Address-14, Bird's Terrace , Thornton Heath, Croydon. POOLEY, EDWARD. Born at Richmond, Feb. 13, 1842. The finest wicket- keeper of the day without doubt ; a very effective batsmantoo, with great powers of hitting , and can score from any bowling . SOUTHERTON, JAMES. Born at Petworth, Sussex, Nov. 16, 1827. The best slow round-arm bowler of the age ; very clever with the ball and has great commandover it ; a good bat, too, whenruns are wanted. Address -RowBarge Inn, Godalming , Surrey . SWANN, J. Born in Leicestershire . Played steadily and consistently for Surrey in 1873 ; not a very pretty style , but usually safe for runs . Agood field and safe long -stop . Address -Surrey Cricket Ground, Kennington Oval , London, S.E. S U S S E X . CHARLWOOD, HENRY. Born at Horsham, Sussex , Dec. 19, 1847. 5 ft . 6 in. ; 10 st. 4 lbs . Themost dashing batsmanin the South in 1872. Hits well onboth sides , and is strong all round, but was rather out of form in 1873. Address-Chesterfield , Derbyshire ; e Sussex, and U.S.E.E. DAVEY, JOHN GEORGE. Born at Brighton , June 21, 1847. 5ft. 84 in.; 111 st. Avery useful all -round cricketer , as he bats well and freely ; is a good field anywhere , and can take wicket very well ; bowls round -arm mediumright . Address-2, WestHill Street , Brighton ; e Lord's . FILLERY , RICHARD . Born at Henfield , Sussex , Feb 4, 1844. 5 ft. 74 in.; 12 st. 4lbs. All round very valuable to his county ; a straight medium-pace right -handed bowler ; bats in good style and hits well , and no mean field ; showed great improvement in every way in 1873.
