A. (Cheltenham ). A good bat, fair field , and useful bowler , but lacks energy. FILGATE , C. R. (Cheltenham ). One of the best cricketers that were ever at Cheltenham ; bats well against any bowling , and is sure and energetic in the field . Didnot play muchin first -class matches in 1873. GORDON, C. S. (Marlborough ). A smart little cricketer , having great freedom as abat, andbeing a good field . Only played once for his county in 1873. GOODWYN, F. W. (Clifton ). A good batsman , with strong wrist play , and a fine field . Played but little in 1873. GRACE, E. M. A very brilliant bat, with a good eye for hitting ; a splendid field , and without doubt the best amateur point . GRACE, W. G. The champion cricketer at all points . As a batsman stands alone , as a field has no superior , and bowls with great success . (See his doings in 1873, p. 174. ) GRACE, G. F. Only second to his brother Gilbert . Showedbetter cricket than ever during 1873, both defensive and offensive , having plenty of hitting power. A fine field , a long and good thrower, and bowled very well towardsthee n dof theseason. HALFORD, J. A very strong bat, good field , fair bowler and wicket -keeper . Withmore practice would be very useful to his county . KNAPP, Ε. Μ. Agood cricketer at every point ; a steady bat, but by no means cramped , as he has good powers of hitting ; a safe field , and sometimes bowls ; played a fine innings for Gloucestershire against Surrey at Clifton . LANG, T. W. (Clifton ). Plays for Gloucestershire . (See notes on Clifton College Eleven, p. 117. ) MATTHEWS, T. J. (Clifton ). Has a very stubborn defence , and plays with a straight bat, but has a style of his own. TOWNSEND, F. Has proved himself in good company to be a first -class cricketer , with great powers of batting ; indeed , his batting is of the finest kind , and no eleven of Gentlemen is complete without him; bowls " lobs " for thecounty. Asteady bat, but possesses plenty of hit to punish loose bowling ; a fine field , but was rather a failure as a slow left round- a r mbowler.
