There is , however , little change in the order of the previous year , though Wootton has retired prac- tically , Willsher is not seen so often , and Howitt was not so successful as of old. William M'Intyre fully maintained his reputation , as his figures will show, while Watson proved himself to be one of the best , if not the very best , slow bowler of the day ; a brilliant field , too , to his own bowling . Rylott was. deadly at Lord's for M.C.C. against the Universities , but he did nothing in the match at Lord's for Wootton's benefit , though his average is excellent through- out, and a more hardworking cricketer or more useful manit would be difficult rdwo to find . Morley , too, has maintained his promise , though it remains to be seen whether he can stand the work of an engagement at Lord's . Southerton and Alfred Shaw are usually close together , and their figures differ little from those of 1872. J. C. Shaw, on the other hand , shows an improvement of importance , while Lillywhite is almost stationary , and Mr. D. Buchanan is one point to the bad. Mr. A. W. Ridley's " lobs " show deterioration to a small extent , and Martin M'Intyre's fast too , each falling about four points . Flint , of Derbyshire , according to good judges , is a slow round bowler of some pre- tension , and Mycroft , from the same shire , from the statement of a competent authority , is a fast bowler , good enough for any county . The deeds of those unenumeratedmust speak for themselves . A V E R A G E SOF 10 R U N SP E RW I C K E TO R U N D E R. A. Watson(slow round) 279 W. M'Intyre (fast rnd) Carter (fast round).......
