1 6 7 therisin as best andmost promising batsmen of the day should makesuch abad sign , though Lockwood's ill success can, to some extent , be extenuated by illness during the early part of the season . Amongthe others , Wild, Bignall , Oscroft , Fillery , and Rowbothamall did work; while amongthe rising talent ,Swannof Surrey , Ulyett of Yorkshire , G. McCanlis of Kent, R. G. Barlow of Lancashire , all won their spurs , and A. F. Smith of Yorkshire proved himself in the first rank of batsmen by a consistent succession of good scores . Amongthe amateurs Mr. W. G. Grace stands , as usual , pre -eminent , and his feats will more than bear comparison , heplayed in one innings less than in 1872 and shows an advance of 162, having an average of 68 against 57. Of his marvellous exploits full detail will be found in a special chapter , so that here it would be mere repetition . Amongthe others , Mr. G. F. Grace forms a worthy second , only inferior to his brother as the second best all -round cricketer of the day. Then there were Mr. I. D. Walker, in better batting form than ever ; Mr. Yardley , quite as good , with all his own aptitude for hitting ; Mr. C. J. Ottaway , brilliant in defence , as of old ; Mr. G. H. Longman, neat in style and always effective ; Mr. R. A. H. Mitchell , only once seen at Canterbury , but with no loss of skill ; Mr. E. F. S. Tylecote , w h odid good service for the Gentlemen against the Players , at the Oval ; Mr. F. Townsend, one of the very best batsmen, amateur or professional , of the day ; Mr. W. H. Hadow; Mr. A. N. Hornby, brisk and dashing as he always was ; Mr. W. R. Gilbert ; Mr. N. Morris ; and last , the most promising débutant of all , Mr. J. M. Cotterill , who came to the rescue of Sussex at a late hour of the season , and showed himself a grand batsman in the highest sense of the word...
