COMPARISONS are odious , but it is by comparisons alone that a proper test can be acquired between the present and the past . Nor is there comparison that can be instanced to reflect any degree of brilliance on the season of 1873. It wasa moist summer, as most cricketers have reason to remember, and the bat was rather at a discount , especially during the early months. In 1872 there were three experts who could lay claim to the distinction of having mademore than 1,000 runs in first class matches , and in 1873 there is but one. In1872 Mr. W. G. Grace is alone in his glory , though Jupp is on the very verge of repeating his feat , having made only four runs short of the requisite amount. A wonderful falling off in the play of Richard Humphrey, who has only 589 runs for 40 innings , against 1,071 for 49 in 1872 , and a marvellous advance in Andrew Greenwood and Emmett, both of whomhave almost doubled their aggregates of 1872. Daft was only seen once in London, except for his county , in the first match of the season at Prince's , for the benefit of the Cricketers Fund, but he made 416 runs in 12 innings , considerably helped by amost brilliant display of 161 for Notts against Yorkshire , early in the season . Lockwood shows 324 runs less than the previous year , having only played three innings less ,while Charlwood played in two innings more and shows a deficit of 220runs bycomparison. Indeed, it was a strange coincidence that three of the 3
