1 3 3 I SURREYSCHOOL ELEVEN IN 1873. Rev. H. W. Pate, 4:6, went off muchin his batting , but is still a hard hitter ; a fair wicket keeper , at times very effec- tive . *Rev. J. C. Whall, 6.1 , was a good and reliable bat at the beginning , but sell off afterwards from want of practice ; an excellent field , but should learn to throw in better . H. Cassuell , 23.5 , has much improved in steadiness with the bat, and wasdecidedly the best all -round manin the Eleven ; a useful bowler of every description ; a splendid field . *R. Steele , 16.1 , was Captain for 1873, and took great pains with his Eleven ; a very good bat, with great hitting powers ; defence not so good, but much improved towards the end of the season ; an ex- cellent bowler, but should keep to one style . *H. F. M. Watson , 16·1, a capital bat , with fine defence ; wants more hitting powers , especially against slows ; a smart field at point . *A. Somers -Bradford , 6.1 , a steady batsman, and has much im- proved, playing with a very straight bat ; can keep wicket whenrequired . H. J. Tanner (Secretary for 1873), 5.6 , a good bat at the beginning of the season , but didnot comeoff afterwards ; at times a good long -stop . * W. G. Snadden lacks freedom in batting ; occasionally played a useful innings , but should put more spirit into the game. T. Steele , 5.5 , a neat and good bat, with fair hitting power ; a fast , and at times a splendid bowler. W. E. Barton , 4.8 , a fine bat for so young aplayer , and with practice will prove a most useful man next year ; the best field in the Eleven. J. A. Wyatt , 3.1 , does not excel in batting , having a pecu- liar style ; a most useful bowler and good field .. * Signifies has left .
