Merlin 3 6 1 2 1 1 0 2 1 BRIGHTONELEVENIN 1873.-E. Pemberton -Barnes , any thing but alucky bat ; his form, which was always good, has not deserted him; he plays good cricket , with a straight bat, but except in the Tonbridge and town matches did not always score as he deserves ; a good field , and a fair change bowler , and is sure to make a good Captain . C. K. Cooke ought to make a really good bowler ; his pace is medium, with a good spin, and whenhe tries , can bowl well, but without patience and hard work cannot expect to succeed ; he sometimes gets runs , but not in the most approved style . * W. H. Gater , at present more ornamental than useful as abat ; with steady practice , promises to make a good bat ; a good field .. J. Hallett , a very good field at long leg ; wants energy in batting : would prob- ably have done better if he had not always gone in first . *C. B. Maitland does not care enough about the gameever to excel in it ; as languid in the field as at the wicket . L. M. Moriarty , a fair bowler , straight , but easy ; batting and field- ing only moderate . *S. Merlin did good service as a wicket -keeper , and made good scores in the Lancing and Eastbourne matches ; his style is severe , with no lack of confidence , but his bat is not always straight . *E. C. Rothney , a good field at point ; a fair left -handed bat, cuts and drives well , but rather weak on the leg stump ; might have bowled if he had tried . *J. Tillard played several good innings last season ; a free hitter all round, with a good defence ; the fault in his play , and a very general one throughout the Eleven (attributable to bad wickets ), wasa want of forward play . The Eleven owe muchof their success to his Cap- taincy , under which all the most important matches were won. A sa bowler, is straight and painstaking . *H. Trethewy , a good long -stop ; would probably have beenmore successful if he had continued to go in first , the very place for which his stubborn defence suited him. G. F. Tippett wants more energy, both in batting and fielding ; should practise free hitting more, without which his style will be always cramped and ineffective ; bowls slow round hand with a fair twist , but rather short . L. H. Vidal wants more freedom about the shoulders ; can hit well on the off side , but rather apt to play across leg stump balls ; inclined to be slack in the field . Secretary for 1874 .
