Gilbert (Captain ) fulfilled his duties as captain to the satisfaction of all ; bats very steadily , with capital form , and punishes severely ; a very fast and good field , but generally keeps wicket : could bowl if he would. *E. A. Phillips (Secretary ) has been a very unlucky bat in consequence of having to pay muchattention to boating , but very much improved towards the end of the season ; an excellent mediumpace round arm bowler. R. W. Harper, Captain for 1874 , a very safe and confident bat , with good style ; his bowling has been the mainstay of the Eleven. *E. Bourchier , punishes loose bowling very effectually , but has not improved muchon his last year's form either in batting or bowling . *J. Hughes , a fair bat , generally exciting the field by stealing his runs ; agood round armbowler and splendid field at point . A. Waters , a very steady bat, with pretty style , always making runs ; a good slow round arm bowler and excellent field anywhere . *G. M. Ashdown, a good bat in practice , but seldom coming off in matches owing to diffidence . D. R. Lewis , a steady and pretty bat, but scarcely as good in the field as he might be . W. W. English has very much improved in his batting , and is a good change bowler. E. R. P. Keely , an extremely pretty and steady bat, usually going in first , and can field whenhe likes .. C. Robinson , a good and painstaking bat , making runs freely off any but Devery exceptional bowling ; fields well and long stops excellently . and yieng bas 2 0
