James Lillywhiite's Cricketers' Annual 1874

01 2 0 hits well to leg. His bowling has not been so effective this year. Adashing field , covering a great deal of ground, and a safe catch . A. P. Lucas has quite ful- filled the hopes that were entertained of him last year. A masterly bat, playing mostcorrect cricket , and has excellent defence ; cuts hard behind point ; hits to leg well ; and, with more height , would also drive . Bowls slow round, andmay beuseful next year . Has improved in the field , and between wickets . Takes the wicket fairly at times . *H. B. Mallam, unsuccessful with the bat, but im- proved just before he left , and hits well to leg. Sometimes fields well. S. S. Schultz , one of the bowlers of the Eleven ; has generally bowled well , having a good delivery , but apt to be lazy. Bats in good style , but not quick enough, partly due to his being cut over at the beginning of the season . Afair field . T. R. Fleming , a capital bat, combining strong defence with good driving powers, and plays with a straight bat ; his batting must not be judged by his average . Has long -stopped excellently during the year, and is a very safe catch . Q. E. Roughton has improved very muchby taking pains in practice ; is still rather stiff , andplays too much back. Has been useful as a fast bowler ; an active field . H. M. Lindsay has a free style , and drives well, but hits too muchto be depended o n. Runswell between wickets , and is a safe field and catch . J. G. Thring has ona few occasions played a good innings , but has a bad habit of running out and getting under the ball . More energy and attention to what is told him would be serviceable.
