James Lillywhiite's Cricketers' Annual 1874

1 1 8 CLIFTON COLLEGE ELEVEN IN 1873 .-*H. G. Tylecote was Captain again in 1873, and a most brilliant season the school has had under his management. H efully maintains his reputation as a fine field and a capital bat ; in bowling , whether slow, or fast round, and at the wickets , he has always done good service to the Eleven. * T. W. Lang is the best all -round player in the Eleven ; a first- rate mediumpaced bowler , remarkably steady and true , with great coolness and judgment ; a fine bat, cutting beautifully , and a very neat field . Played again in 1873 for Gloucestershire , and has proved a most valuable memberof the County team . *F. Taylor is a very fine bat , hitting well all round , and in first -rate form ; he made some brilliant innings during the season , as his high average (44) testifies ; he is a very good out field , and has been useful to the eleven , nowand then, both as a round arm bowler and wicket -keeper ; he, too, has played for the County during the season . *R. A. Read did not fulfil the promise of last year, as a bat, in the earlier part of the season , but improved con- siderably towards the end, and made some good innings ; a very neat and effective point . R. E. Bush, a very steady and most useful bat, combining a good defence with very fair hitting powers ; he kept wicket in most of the matches , if not so successfully as was expected last year, yet always creditably and well . * W. C. W. Rawlinson improved wonderfully during the season , and become one of the most trustworthy bats of the Eleven , having a good defence , and a very fine , strong cut; auseful change bowler , and a fair field . A. H. Heath is a remarkably patient and steady bat, and played some particularly good innings in the earlier part of the season ; he is a good field , and a capital change bowler, and, altogether , perhaps has shown the greatest improvement all round. T. D. Berrington , a very pretty , stylish bat ; but he must pay more attention to shooters , and be more lively in the field . E. L. Maisey , a promising bat, and a fair change bowler ; with moreenergy he ought to make a good field . *C. E. Strange , a free and merry bat, with considerable hitting powers , and a very fair field . R. W. Rücker , a late , but a very useful addition to the team ; a very careful bat and field , and good at t h ewicket. * Signifies has left . U P P I N G H A M S C H O O L . W. S.
