Browne was captain of the Eleven in 1872' as well as 1873. Avery energetic and hardworking cricketer , perhaps so much so as to interfere sometimes with his judgment as captain ; is a good bat but hits too freely : an excellent field anywhere, a good bowler, and a capital judge of a run, Winsthe silver cups for best bowling and batting averages . *F. H.. Mellor, the most correct bat of the Eleven, his play on the leg side being especially brilliant ; an excellent out-fielder , and useful underhand slow bowler : will be in the University Eleven if he tries . *C. Abbott , plays in very good style , more particularly on the off-side , and gets his runs very quickly ; a brilliant field , covering a lot of ground : was unsuccessful as a bowler . T. W. Oliver , a very dangerous bat, hitting impartially to all parts of the field in good style ; improved greatly during the season in his fielding ; very careless generally in his bowling , to which he should pay more attention . *P. Burn , bats well on a fast ground , punishing loose bowling as it should be kept wicket for the Eleven , and though occasionally good, was not always to be depended on. *E. Leese , a very fair bat, hitting well to the off, but unlucky ; muchimproved in fielding . *H. Gell, one of the best fields ever at the college , seldom making amistake , and neat and finished in style ; a fair bowler, and bats in good form, though wanting as yet in power to punish . H. T. Allsopp , a very persevering and good cricketer , bats in promising : style , and is a splendid out field ; a good change bowler , and has got wickets when: theyhave been wanted. *B. Harrison , avery steady bat, but from nervousness or some other cause fell off in his play at the end of the season ; a good long stop. *W. Auld, a promising bat, but unfortunately a nervous one ; perhaps from the same defect missed catches , though a fair field . A. L. Russell , the slow round -arm. bowler of the Eleven , and generally successful ; a much improved and resolute bat, and acapital field at point , ought to be a good cricketer if he sticks to it. A
