Smith , Captain for 1873 , in which capacity he worked hard , though his eleven were not so successful as they might have been. Is an excellent medium-paced bowler, nearly always on the spot : hits veryhard as a bat, and has played some very fine hitting innings during the season , but wants more defence and confidence : an excellent field and catch . *J. F. Cooper , a very good bat; plays in beautiful form and has a very pretty and effective cut : a good but rather uncertain field ; has been knownto bowl. F. H. Lee, the most useful all -round man in the Eleven , a magnificent field anywhere , especially at point , and a capital " lob " bowler : wants more defence in batting , but ought to be of great use next year (Capt . for 1874). A. P. Wickham , a good steady bat, with a very obstinate defence : an excellent long-stop and reliable field anywhere . A. C. Sim, a good bat, but might make more use of his formidable reach : a capital field at cover -point and long -leg, and a safe catch . *E.A. Jackson , avery careful and steady bat, most useful to go in first : a clumsy field , but might improve with practice . *F. Melhuish , a very sound and effective bat, with good powers both of offence and defence : a brilliant field and safe catch ; can bowl if required . *F. M. C. Mackarness , a good steady bat and a capital judge of a run, though rather inclined to try dangerous experiments : active and painstaking in the field . *S. B. Booth, has been of great use at the wicket , which he has taken well throughout the season : improved wonderfully in batting towards the end of the season , but might play more freely . *E. A. Copleston , has been greatly handi- capped the whole year by a bad knee : a free hitting goodbat, dangerous if well in; agood field and can bowl whenrequired . G. R. Burge, has disappointed us onthe whole; bats very well in practice , but seems to lose his head in amatch: bowls well on his day, and ought to be very destructive when stronger ; a fair but nervous field. *Signifies has left .
