James Lillywhiite's Cricketers' Annual 1874
1 0 8 HARROWELEVEN IN 1873.-H. Leaf (Captain ) did his best in this difficult post , and was successful in once more bringing victory to his school . Canhit hard, but has not very good defence ; brilliant field , with very fine return . A. J. Webbe, although again unsuccessful at Lord's , played uniformly well during the term at Harrow; has got rid of the " forward poke " which proved fatal to him last year so often , with good defence , though rather apt at times to try and hit too much; good field , bowls fairly well, andwith care will take the wicket. Is Captain for 1874. * P. F. Hadow amply fulfilled the hopes formed byhis play last year, and his not-out innings against Eton will bear comparison with any yet played in this match ; has a strong defence , and cuts and drives well ; he greatly distinguished himself in his debût for Middlesex v. Surrey in August; is very active at point , and bowls lobs . * F. L. Shand, the best bowler in the Eleven, being fast left -hand, with high action and a break from the off ; proved very diffi- cult again at Lord's , where he also batted very well , in which department he has wonderfully improved since last year ; hard-working field . * A. J. Layard , fine free bat, with good hitting powers, which however require to be curtailed ; fields well at long -leg , and bowls slow round. * W. H. Long, one of the best bats in the Eleven to fast bowling , combining good defence with strong hitting powers ; has cured himself of his habit of getting out 1.b.w. , which was so against him last year ; quick field and sure catch , but should practise throwing in. F. D. Leyland , good all -round player , having a nice style of batting , though unlucky this season ; very fast right -handed bowler, invaluable as a change , though his long run causes himsoon to tire ; a capital field , and should , with ordinary care , be of great ser- vice to the Eleven next year . P. E. Crutchley , also very good all round ; very hard hitter , with peculiar though effective style ; the best field in the Eleven at long stop or elsewhere , and bowls slow round. G. B. Walker, fair bat, but lacks defence at present ; the wicket -keeper of the Eleven , and kept very pluckily at Lord's with bad hands , though he hardly came up to the expectations formed of him at that post. W. H. Grenfell , a right -hand bowler (round), rather over mediumpace , straight , and good length ; ought to be very useful next year, by whichtime, it is to be hoped, he will have also improved greatly in his batting and fielding . * C. Morrall , the slow-bowler of the Eleven, with a nice easy action and a curl in the air ; by no means the best bat in the school , but sur- prised all by making a determined stand at Lord's at a very critical point in the first innings , for which he deserves all praise ; wants energy in the field . * Signifies has left .
