Ottaway , Eton (B.N.C )., a good Cap- tain, with excellent judgment and knowledge of the game; possesses wonderful powers of defence , and plays with great judgment and patience ; a safe field . W. Law, Harrow (B.N.C. ), a dashing field , and useful change bowler ; a good bat, with plenty of hit . S. E. Butler , Eton (B.N.C. ), a fast bowler, but hardly so dangerous as in 1872 ; improved as a bat , and played more than one good innings . C. K. Francis , Rugby(B.N.C. ), not far removed from the best all -round m a nin the Eleven; a fine bowler, with plenty of spin ; bats in good style , and a sure field . A. W. Ridley , Eton (Christ Church ), bowls " lobs ," and always with success ; has excellent defence , and is a good bat , though rather unlucky in 1873. C. A. Wallroth , Harrow (B.N.C. ), did not " come off " against Cambridge , but none the less a fine bat, with strong defence , though not the best style ; played a splendid innings against Middlesex at Prince's ; a hard -working field and sure catch . E. S. Garnier , Marlborough (University ), a very useful man in the Eleven ; a good bat , and a splendid field . C. E. Nepean , Charterhouse (University ), one of the most dangerous batsmen in the Eleven, with plenty of defence , and no lack of hitting power ; kept wicket fairly . C. W. Boyle , Clifton (University ), the bowler of the Eleven ; showered destruction everywhere but at Lord's ; very fast round arm, and wonderfully straight ; improving bat . J. Maude, Eton (Merton ), a left -hand, round arm, medium pace bowler ; bowls well , both with judgment and precision ; an excellent field . W. H. Game, Sherborne (Oriel ), a magnificent field and unerring catch ; hits at everything , and "came off " in the first innings against Cambridge ; can play steady cricket when he likes , and would do well to adhere to the recognised rules of batting , rather than to trust always to his e y e.
