James Lillywhiite's Cricketers' Annual 1874

8 3 1 8 (1) Sussexv. Yorkshire. Sheffield , July 14 and 15. A revival of an old match, which an interval of nearly nineteen years had almost caused to fall into disuse . Acontest , though, by no means brilliant as a reappearance , though the rain that prevailed sadly dimmedthe effect of the general arrangements . Yorkshire had just entered into their third hundred whenthe end came , but Sussex displayed form positively effete , as will be guessed when Fillery enjoyed the honours of chief score with 21 and0, and in the second innings Charlwood's 11 was the only double figure . Yorkshire wonby aninnings and 62 runs, twenty Sussex wickets only producing 103 runs from thebat. Yorkshire , 200. Sussex, 91 and 47 ; total , 138. Hill (Yorkshire ) Overs. Maidens. Runs. 6 1 3 2 5 5 Wickets. 8 (2) Sussexv. Yorkshire. Brighton , July 21 , 22, 23. A contest infinitely more replete with incident than its predecessor , and one that would in all likehood have been productive of a close finish had the Sussex fielding for once been up to the mark. Sussex at first madea poor exhibition with Mr. Mare (13, not out ), the highest figures , and Yorkshire had 116 runs to the good when each side had enjoyed an innings , Rowbotham making 50 and not out. In their second attempt Sussex comported themselves most respectably , as Fillery was able to raise as manyas 53 runs , and there were six double figures in all , Mr. C. Sharp next in order with 42 runs . Ultimately Yorkshire wanted 109 runs to win, and this sum cost them six wickets , a good not out innings of 43by AndrewGreenwood helping materially to give them the match. York- shire won by four wickets . Yorkshire , 179 and 109 (six wickets ) ; total , 288 . Sussex, 63 and 224 ; total , 287. & Overs. Maidens.
