Indeed , there is but one victory in the way of consolation , while one of the two drawn games was only prevented from merging into defeat by the premature expiry of time. Sussex wants an invigoration in the wayof new bowling badly enough , for Lillywhite cannot well support the whole weight , and Fillery , useful enough at times , be it granted , and valuable as a change ,has not yet reached the position of first bowler in a county . It is true that Sussex has lost muchby the transfer of Southerton to the shire of his adoption , but the county has shown some of the rare old spirit that used to actuate cricketers , whenthey threw downthe gauntlet to the best , regardless of defeats . It is certain that Southern cricket is under a cloud , but there is always a silver lining after all , and we heartily wish good luck to Sussex in 1874. At least it has found a splendid batsman in Mr. J. M. Cotterill , and time is sure to see it once more revolved on to the top of the wheel. R e s u l t so f M a t c h e s .
