First-Class Matches West Indies 1989/90 to 1998/99

5 Preface This is the seventh volume in a series that aims to make available in book form printed scores of first-class matches that have not hitherto appeared in that form in established sources. Up to the end of the 1988/89 season, the scores of nearly all domestic matches in the West Indies can be found in Statistics of West Indies Cricket 1865-1989 , compiled by Jimmy Richards and Mervyn Wong (Heinemann [Caribbean] Ltd, Kingston, 1990). The exceptions were the two series of ‘internal’ matches played in Trinidad and Guyana between the late 1950s and the late 1980s; these matches were covered in the fifth volume of this series. From 1989/90 however, the full scorecards of domestic matches in the region have not previously appeared in book form, although they can be found in the more magazine-like Benson & Hedges West Indies Cricket Annual , edited by the late Tony Cozier. The present volume, covering the ten seasons from 1989/90 to 1998/99, includes fuller scorecards than can be found in the Annual , including in particular such recently-researched details as the close of play scores on each day of the matches. This book is therefore the most complete and comprehensive source of the scores of domestic matches in the West Indies ever to appear in print. To ensure full coverage of the region’s cricket over these seasons, the book also includes the scorecards of matches, such as Test and tour matches, that are already in print elsewhere, together with the card of the last-ever ‘internal’ match in the region, played in Guyana in 1989/90, which is also included in volume 5 of this series. From the 2007/08 season onwards, the ACS has been publishing the full scores of all first-class matches outside the UK on an annual basis. The gap in the record of printed scores in the West Indies therefore extends to the 2006/07 season. A further volume in this series, currently scheduled for publication in late 2021, will therefore cover matches in the period from 1999/2000 to 2006/07 inclusive. Key to the league tables For each of the ten seasons that it covers, this book includes the league tables for the domestic first-class competition, known as the Red Stripe Cup until 1996/97, the WI Board President’s Cup in 1997/98, and the Busta Cup in 1998/99. Throughout that period, the number of points awarded for wins, draws, etc remained unchanged. The key to the abbreviations in the tables, and the points to which each corresponds, is as follows: Win (W): 16 points Loss (L): 0 points Lost but won on first innings (LWF): 5 points Won on first innings in drawn match (DWF): 8 points Lost on first innings in drawn match (DLF): 4 points No decision on first innings (ND): 4 points Match abandoned without a ball bowled (Ab): 4 points Total points (Pts)
