First-Class Matches West Indies 1989/90 to 1998/99

8 Second-placed Barbados also completed all five of their matches, but ended a long way behind the winners. Reigning champions Jamaica finished in third place, but even if they had played, and won, both of their abandoned matches they would still have ended the season 11 points adrift of the Leewards. Further down the table, the Windward Islands celebrated their first win in the competition since 1985/86 when they defeated Trinidad & Tobago. The latter were captained for the first time by 20-year-old Brian Lara but ended the season without a win, and in last place in the table for the first time since 1983/84. In the Red Stripe competition alone, the leading runscorers and wicket-takers both came from the Leewards’ team – respectively, Richie Richardson with 421 runs at 70.16, and Eldine Baptiste with 26 wickets at 17.50. Over the first-class season as a whole the leaders were Gordon Greenidge (Barbados and WI) with 898 runs at 64.14, and Ian Bishop (Trinidad & Tobago and WI) with 44 wickets at 17.02.
