First-Class Matches Pakistan 1975/76 to 1979/80
Approach to Sources Readers are reminded that these scorecards are some forty years old and reflect scoring practice at the time; thus they lack some material that might be expected in a more recent card. Details of the duration in time of each individual innings, the balls faced and the boundaries struck, are therefore not included. The customary breakdown of extras is also often not available; likewise second-innings changes in the batting or bowling orders are not always available. The names of many substitute catchers are not recorded, and it will also be noted that there is no indication of which batsman was out at the fall of each wicket. Sources for this period are very patchy and often inconsistent. Scores in this volume are based on those supplied to Cricket Archive by the late Ghulam Mustafa Khan, who was associated with the Pakistan Board as a statistician from 1957/58 and who served as Board Secretary from 1995 to 1997. These scores have been supplemented by material from other sources, such as contemporary magazines and newspapers, in addition to Mr Kazi’s unpublished papers for this period, which have been of huge assistance. In the event of a clear contradiction between sources, however, the version supplied by Ghulam Mustafa Khan is given priority. Acknowledgments I am extremely grateful to Philip Bailey and all at Cricket Archive (cricketarchive.com ) for the supply of basic scorecard data; in addition Philip undertook substantial research to resolve the numerous queries that arose while this book was in preparation. The many amendments during production also meant that the typesetting was more onerous than usual and I am grateful to Pete Griffiths of Limlow Books for undertaking it. A constant difficulty in dealing with Pakistani cricket is the large number of cases where an identical name is shared by two, three or even more players with overlapping careers. This volume contains a special key, just before the match index, listing all the names shared by more than one cricketer during the five seasons under review. It is hoped that this key, for which I am indebted to Keith Walmsley, will allow readers to distinguished between identically-named players. Keith also, together with Ric Finlay and John Ward, provided many helpful comments and suggestions. Keeping track during this poorly documented period of the various planned and unplanned changes in format has been, it must be confessed, something of a voyage of discovery for the present compiler; so apologies are offered in advance for any oversights or misunderstandings.
