Below, the WCA’s 1939/40 touring side prepare for a warm-up match before departing for Australia, but the tour was cancelled due to the outbreak of war. The difference in attire and attitude is striking: the WCA adopted a dress code and playing style that aimed to appease critics and emphasise femininity.
