Cricket Witness No 3 - The Daffodil Blooms
7 Introduction that grand phrase from the world of entertainment, “for one night only” a little part of Wales. As on that heady day back in ‘69, I had a broad smile on my face yet again when I walked into the classrooms at the Cathedral School in Wells on Monday morning for a full timetable of geography teaching. My mood of elation meant that any of my charges who had failed to complete their homework or had forgotten to bring the right books and files to school that day were let off with a kindly word and smile rather than my usual, and more stern, words of admonishment. Despite the best efforts of the Glamorgan team in more recent times, they have failed to match the achievements of captains Wilf Wooller, Tony Lewis and Matthew Maynard, plus their teams, in winning the County Championship. Just 33 men can claim to have taken part in games when Glamorgan have clinched the county crown, and this book reflects on the first occasion, and the initial group of players to win the County Championship for Glamorgan in that wonderful, golden summer of 1948 when the daffodil county was in full bloom.
