On the 22nd and 23rd ultinio the Australians played their third match in England at Twickenham. As Blacknan and Bannerman 'were both a little out of health, they stood down to make way for McDonnell and Bonnor, the latter of whominmade his first appear. ance as a member of the present team. The presence of sucli cricketers as the Brothurs Grace, Messrs. A. P. Lucas, A. G. Steel, and Webbe on the Oileans side, led to the belief taint the Australians would, for the first tinie since their arrival, mneet with their match ; and so it proved, although the club would have farcd badly had it not been for the brillie.nt display of A. P. Lucas. His unweary- ing defonce at the outset helped nainly to break the Australian bowling, and his innings of 87 not out, following as it lias so closely on his tirst score of 145 for Mr. Thornton's eleven against Cain- bridge, must be accounted an extraordinary performance. W. G. Grace, despite his recent illness, hit with vigour, more freely than hitherto. rhe Australian fielding was ail round very good, but excepting that of Palmer, the bowling had nu great sting in it. Spofforth was again a failure, and Murdoch at the wicket wvas cor- tainly net a success. Again, as at the Ovr in 1880, the Colonial captain showed how bravely le can play lin uphill game, and on this occasion, as then, lie was entirely instrumental in saving bis side. Pilling allowed an easy chance of running im out when lie had only got eighlt to escape, but with the exce»tpoiî of one uppish hit in front of the wickets, lie never made anything like a mistake, and his coolness and judgmient at a critical tine were as reinarkable as ever. Under the circumstances hi display ras an extraordinary one. He was in four hours and a half, playing sone of the very best English amateur bowling without a fault. Score: ORLFANI. W. G.
