During the early part of cricket season 2015/16, the international tennis player had no contact from the tennis world. Towards the end of the season she had an increasing number of phone calls from her ex doubles partner, Casey Dellacqua to return to tennis and finally relented. The rest is history. During her break in 2020, which was for a full 12 months, she spent time at the Brookwater Golf Club, situated within a mile of her home at Springfield. She reduced her golf handicap to low single figures and became club champion. WSDCC celebrated its centenary on 10 th May 2021. The inaugural president was MJ (Roger) Hartigan who went on to be an Australian Board of Control member during bodyline. He had scored a century on test debut in 1907/08 against England. Other test players who have played for WSDCC are WA Brown, GJ Cosier, LJ Johnson, JN Maguire, CJ McDermott and CG Rackemann. Another player who came through the junior ranks at WSDCC was SJ Magoffin of Western Australia, Queensland, Surrey, Leicestershire 2ndXI, Sussex and Worcestershire, completing his first class career in 2018 with 597 first class wickets. The tennis/cricket player is regarded so highly, not only for her skill as a tennis player but in the modest and unassuming way in which she goes about life. She is truly a national heroine. It will not be long before a statue of her is erected in either Brisbane or Ipswich. She together with Rod Laver, Roy Emerson, Mal Anderson and Pat Rafter are Queensland products for the whole tennis world to be proud of. Well done Ashleigh Barty. Roger Prentice (The writer played for WSDCC spanning 1970-1995 and was an administrator spanning 1973-2014).
